Ronan Moore, Social Democrats general election candidate from Trim, has called on Meath West’s sitting TDs to support proposed abortion legislation in the wake of the recent landmark referendum result.

Ronan, the only candidate in the Meath West to actively canvass for a Yes vote during the campaign, stated:

“112 of the 117 Meath West ballot boxes tallied returned a Yes vote sometimes by more than a 3 to 1 margin. While it might prove personally difficult for the sitting TDs who called for a No vote, I would urge them to listen to the voices of the women and men of Meath West who voted Yes by a 64% majority and vote to allow the proposed legislation to pass into law.”

Speaking about the overall result, Ronan continues:

“Like many people I was taken aback by the scale of the Yes vote, however in some ways it should not have come as too much of a shock. The Social Democrats in Meath have been working tirelessly on this issue under the umbrella of Meath Together for Yes for many months. On every canvass we had more Yeses than Nos of those that told us their voting intentions. In both Ballivor and Enfield on the week of the vote it was 6 to 1, Yes to No, which was reflected in the final 70% and 73% Yes vote in these areas –  showing that a large majority of men and women, young and old recognise the need for change. It is now the responsibility of our elected representatives to hear our voices and vote to carry out the wishes of the majority of the people.”
