Local Kells man Padraigh Bennett has taken up the role of Ambassador for the Irish branch of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day Project. In a special event paying tribute to Nelson Mandela and celebrating his 100th year the project is taking on the break the Guinness World Record for “Longest Crochet Scarf in the World”!

Padraigh is calling on all crochet-ers and knitters to come along to the Knit-a-Ton on Saturday the 2nd of June from 10am-2pm in the Kells Peoples Resource Centre, Kells, Co Meath.

The record is currently held by India for a 14 km long scarf, but is set to be beat by South Africa who are aiming for 27km! Which is one kilometre for every year that Mandela spent behind bars.

Padraigh joined the Kells Craft Club in January this year to learn the skill of crochet himself: “I didn’t want to ask people to do something I couldn’t do myself.” Padraigh says. “I really enjoyed learning the craft and I got a lot of donations of wool, which will be put to good use now”.

In late 2013, Carolyn Styen decided she wanted to pay tribute in some small way to Nelson Mandela who had just passed away. Madiba’s (as he was known to his friends) former private secretary Zelda La Grange suggested to her that perhaps she should try making 67 blankets to distribute to those in need on Mandela Day. 67 Blankets to represent the 67 years Nelson Mandela spent fighting for social justice, equality and democracy.

Carolyn started and realised she needed help, so she reached out. To date the project has distributed more than 40 000 plus blankets for those in need all over the world.

For the past three years the 67 Blanket Project all over the world has also churned out THOUSANDS of scarves for their #SSS (Secret Scarves Shhh…) initiative.

Every scarf will have a message of love and warmth attached to it, as well as the trademark heart logo – thousands of people who need a little more colour and warmth in their lives will be able to receive our labours of love.

Padraigh say he is bringing the cakes and goodies and he is looking forward to a fun day, where we come together to craft for a worthy cause!

For those who want to get started scarfs need to measure precisely 20cm x 150cm or 20cm x 200cm, hook size no bigger than 6.5. All scarfs for the World Record need to be crocheted, however all other scarfs are accepted and will be handed out to those most in need in Ireland.

“We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference” NELSON MANDELA
